Mr. S. VENKITESWARAN (VENKI)

Mr. Venkiteswaran had a very distinguished practice & career lasting more than five decades in General Civil Law, Companies Act, Insolvency, Criminal Laws, COFEPOSA, FERA, Customs and Central Excise matters. Subsequently, he specialised in Aviation and Shipping laws.
He had been associated with several Committees constituted by the Government of India including the Praveen Singh Committee on review of the Merchant Shipping Act; the Praveen Singh Committee for updating the law relating to Admiralty; the Babu Rajeev Committee to review the Indian Ports Act, 1908, and the Major Port Trusts Act, 1963; the Kakkar Committee on Coastal Shipping; and in drafting the new Merchant Shipping legislation.
He proposed the abolition of the Dock Labour Regulations and successfully assisted in carrying out the same in the Mumbai Port Trust.
During his long career that spanned more than 51 years, he had advised and represented almost all of the Indian shipping companies. The shipping industry knew him as India’s foremost expert on maritime law. He was a Member of the Maritime Transport Committee of the International Chamber of Commerce, Paris.
He has the distinction of obtaining the conviction for pirates in the case of the Alondra Rainbow (a first), after being appointed as a Special Public Prosecutor by the Government of Maharashtra, in the matter of the Alondra Rainbow. He had also been a Director in a number of companies; and had varied interests including in social causes. His vision, wisdom, principles, advice remains the guiding light of the Company.
